Building a Multi-Provider AI Architecture

A deep dive into how Grimoire's multi-provider architecture enables seamless switching between AI models.

Abstraction Without Compromise

Building a multi-provider AI platform requires careful architectural decisions. The core challenge is creating an abstraction layer that works across different APIs without losing access to provider-specific features. Grimoire solves this with a flexible provider interface that supports both common and advanced capabilities.

The Provider Interface

At the heart of our architecture is a unified provider interface that handles authentication, request formatting, streaming responses, and error handling. Each provider implementation extends this base interface while exposing its unique features through typed configuration objects. This means you can use Claude's thinking tokens or GPT-4's vision capabilities without breaking the abstraction.

Configuration as Code

All provider settings, model parameters, and prompt templates are stored as version-controlled configuration files. This approach enables reproducible results, easy rollbacks, and collaborative prompt development. When you switch from one provider to another, only the provider-specific configuration changes—your application code remains untouched.

The result is a system that's both flexible and maintainable, letting teams experiment with different models while maintaining production stability.
